Friday 28th June

The rain of the previous evening had abated and the clouds were slowly starting to clear. It didn’t take us long to pack everything away and break camp. We pulled out of The Old Oaks at 9:50 and headed back through the outskirts of Glastonbury heading for the A39 to take us back to the M5. The Sat Nav told us we had 143 miles to travel to the Caravan Club’s Warwick Racecourse site, and no holdups. By the time we were passing through Bristol, the clouds had completely cleared and the sun was shining. We pulled into Michael Wood Services, northbound this time, around 11:15 for a 20 minute break and to grab a coffee (or tea in Sue’s case) and a bite to eat. Continue reading →

We wandered down the main drive to the camp site, past the dog exercise field and turned right on to Wick Lane. Following the lane to the south we heard a couple of jets in the distance. Since arriving on site we had heard quite a few helicopters making their way in and out of the festival site, I guess taking artists in for their sound-checks and providing some of the aerial shots seen on the news. They weren’t obtrusive and it wasn’t constant and even after hanging up my flying gloves I still turn to look up at them. We wandered further down the lane stopping at the entrance gates to each field to look at the view, each field giving a slightly different vista. We could hear a jet doing a high energy turn somewhere in the distance.

A different view through every gate... the Festival site is in the distance

What a difference a year makes….

This time last year – (well 27th to 30th March actually) we were at the Caravan Club’s recently opened site at Bridlington. The weather could not have been more different. The North Sea at Bridlington was as calm as a mill-pond and we sat outside at a pavement cafe on the sea front enjoying a morning coffee in the warm sun.

The sea was almost as still as a mill pond

The sea was almost as still as a mill pond

In fact the evening was so nice, my alter ego “One Hairy Caravanner” donned shorts and SPB_5D_096524sapron and deployed the Cadac to conjure up the evening meal. We had three fantastic days in Bridlington and enjoyed three days of great weather…. and as I look out of the office window now, it’s sunny, still blowing a hooley and the wind chill makes it feel like below zero out there. What a difference a year makes!

Looking forward to June, by chance (well Twitter actually), we came across a site in Glastonbury…. The Old Oaks –  http://www.theoldoaks.co.uk Some of the reviews it has received and the pictures posted ment it had to be worth a visit. So we have a few days there and maybe visit The Fleet Air Arm Museum and the East Somerset Railway. On the way back we call in at Warwick Racecourse site for a couple of days so we can visit Warwick Castle again and do a bit of shopping. Now where to go in April and May?

A little landmark passed today at around 12:30. The blog had it’s 55,246th viewer, which means that today, just under three months into the year it has had exactly half the number of visitors it had in the whole of last year. Many thanks to all who have visited, posted and tweeted about Caravan Chronicles.

Here’s hoping for a wonderful hot summer!

Seasons Greetings….

Just a quick post to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy Caravanning New Year. 2012 was a great second year caravanning for us which included our first trip abroad. We’ve now totaled 56 nights away and towed over 4700 miles and the blog is just coming up to 35,500 visitors.

Off to a good start…..

The Caravan Club have already started their 2013 season on a good note for me. Back in October I wrote about our/my problem trying to find Warwick Racecourse site ( The French Connection – Finale) and I posted a picture of the text in the Caravan Club handbook.

Well the club has updated the text in the handbook and on the website. I’ll never know if it was the collective mass of other members complaining or the fact I put a couple of links to my blog posting in surveys sent out by the club that did it, or the fact it was due for a review. But a big well done to the Caravan Club staff for doing something about it.

Now if anyone is on pitch 4 at Warwick… just have a look round in the grass, I think my wedding ring might be there somewhere.

Cheers and safe towing for 2013

Simon & Sue

A Bit Of A Review…

We or more probably me don’t normally do site reviews. That said we recently came back from a few days away at Donkey Creek Farm in Freckleton, and we liked it that much I had to put pen to paper…. or in more modern parlance lay fingers on keys. The site is located on Naze…

Flushed With Success…

We have just been for a short stay at Donkey Creek Farm in Freckleton, near Warton…. just up the road from Lytham…. that’s near Blackpool. OK you get the idea. We can’t recommend this site highly enough, in fact in a break of usualness I’m going to write a little review. OK back to the…

Lighting Up The Scene…

A while ago I upgraded the lights on our caravan by changing the functions round and added two new LED reversing lights which I can’t understand why I hadn’t done this years ago. In daylight they are bright… and at night they are really bright… retina burning bright according to reports. Reversing into a dark…

Keeping Electrons Contained…

One thing about being retired… you have way too much time to think about things. One thing that has been wandering round my grey cells for the last few months relates to an email I had September last year and it was from someone who was fitting out a van and had a few electrical…

Something for BMW X3 owners…

A while ago I had an email from a chap called Roy. I thought it was going to be an easy one to sort out but never expected what the eventual issue was. Rather than try to explain all the steps, which is difficult sometimes trying to diagnose without actually being hands on, Roy did…

Is This A Growing Trend..?

First things first… Happy New Year to you all. Ok so I’m a bit late but there you go, that’s what retirement does for you… no sense of time. Right, I seem to be receiving a LOT and by a lot I mean 3 or 4 emails a week offering to provide content for my…

Adapting Our Bike Rack for e-Bikes

Getting to that certain age brings on some restrictions…. My left knee is a bit suspect and Sue’s hip is not as ‘hop’ as it was anymore, This meant of we haven’t been using our bikes as much and as Sue has now officially retired and Henry has settled in to caravanning we are getting…

Has Bailey Built Our Perfect Caravan?…

You know by now I don’t do caravan reviews. I leave it to people far better at it than myself. I have however over the years written a few articles about caravan design ( Never admit to being a caravan designer ) and waffled on as we looked around pondering the merits of changing our…

Just a quick one…

Lithium Upgrade for a caravan I’ve had quite a few people email me asking for more information about the Victron system for a caravan that I was planning mentioned in the previous post. As this seems to have generated a number of questions, rather than give detailed answers to each one I thought I’d post…

A Few Mods and Updates…

After our recent trip to Meathop Fell it was time to say goodbye to an old friend. We have had our leisure battery since 2011 and for 11 years it has given us great service. For the last year or so I have thought hard about converting over to Lithium and drew up plans for…
