In 1931 two French spies photographed the Enigma manuals that were &#039;borrowed&#039; by Hans Schmidt from the German Defence Ministry Cipher Office and the photos were passed on to the Polish General Staff Cipher Bureau in Warsaw. The Enigma setting were handed over to the Polish at the end of 31, but they still could not decipher the messages as the Germans had rewired the code wheels that came on the commercially available machines. It was in December 32 that the Polish ( Marian Rejewski) managed to decipher the first messages. In 1937/38 the German Navy altered the Enigma and the way the code wheels were first set at the start of each message (followed by the Luftwaffe and Army) adding another level of complexity which was to prove unbreakable until Alan Turing and Hut 8 did it in early 1940. The Polish had been able to &#039;read&#039; Enigma navy messages from 33 to 38 but didn&#039;t tell anyone till July 1939.  

There is a wonderful marble monument to the Polish contribution at Bletchley.

The whole story is something that the best spy novels would be hard pressed to beat. It&#039;s worth reading &quot;Enigma - The battle for the code&quot; by Hugh Sebag-Montefiore (who&#039;s family owned Bletchley Park before the war) as it&#039;s supposed to be the most comprehensive account.

Your water problems resonate: I awoke my Lunar Clubman 475-2 CK from its winter slumbers this week ready for a trip to the CCC Boroughbridge site and a visit to the Yorkshire Air Museum at RAF Elvington at the weekend. I loaded the water system overnight with Aquastar and everything worked just fine but in the morning when I came to flush it through the kitchen mixer tap spluttered and gave up the ghost. &#039;Oh pants&#039; I said to myself &#039;the microswitch has gone&#039;, but, as any fule kno, Lunars run on a pressure switch and the bathroom taps still worked. I am afraid that contrary to what some people might say, plumbing is rocket science so it was off to see Robbie at Jubilee Caravans of Ashington and he fixed it in under £10 by taking the tap to bits and cleaning out the filter - simples!

The machines were available commercially just after the First War and it was the Imperial German Navy who first applied them to military use under the name Funkschlüssel C - no wonder we called it Ultra!]]></description>
